Ileen S. Akers
Ileen Susan Frankel (Akers) was born in 1954 in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, in a small town called Belmont (where baseball player Barry Bonds grew up with his family!) Ileen attended John Mac Dougal Elementary School, Ralston Junior High School, and Carlmont High School, now famous for having been portrayed in the movie with Michele Pfeiffer called "Dangerous Minds" (although it wasn't at all like that when she was a student there many years ago!)
Ileen attended college at UCLA from 1972 - 1976. She was there during the years of the John Wooden/Bill Walton basketball dynasty, and saw many championship games played at Pauley Pavilion (GO BRUINS!) She was also fortunate to have been at UCLA when actor Mark Harmon (of "Chicago Hope," "St. Elsewhere," "Freaky Friday" and "NCIS" fame) quarterbacked the UCLA football team, and also when UCLA beat Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1976.
In June, 1976, Ileen graduated from UCLA Magna cum Laude, with a BA in Psychology. She then attended California State University, Los Angeles and San Diego State University, where she obtained Multiple Subjects, Learning Handicapped Specialist, Resource Specialist, and Pupil Personnel Services Credentials, along with a Masters Degree in Education.
Mrs. Akers began teaching special education in 1979 at Horace Mann Middle School, where she worked for 15 years; 12 of them as a special education teacher and Resource Specialist. The last 3 years at Horace Mann, she was a grade-level counselor. In 1994, she became the Head Counselor at Challenger Middle School, where she worked for the next 4 years. When Marshall Middle School opened in 1998, she was eager to become part of the team that opened the "new" school and has worked at "the old Marshall" and currently at "the new Marshall" as Head Counselor since 1999.
Her interests include spending time with her husband and taking care of their two dogs, a black Labrador retriever named Bodie and a border collie named Roy. She has two grown sons, one who is a graduate of SDSU and is currently working as a firefighter and one who is a recent graduate of UCLA. She really misses having her "human boys" at home, but her "canine boys" have done a good job filling in for them! Mrs. Akers most especially enjoys spending time with her friends, going to movies and concerts, shopping for good bargains, walking to breakfast on Sundays, and CHOCOLATE!
Mrs. Akers has high expectations for herself, her children and her students. She believes that people should strive to be the best they can be, and not waste any innate abilities or talents. She enjoys the challenge of helping to motivate her students to set high goals, and is always available to help them create and follow a plan that will put them on the path towards reaching those goals.
